Within the framework of the European Hydrogen Week, Hydrogen Europe and H2 Chile signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim of promoting collaboration in the development and trade of renewable hydrogen between Europe and Chile. This agreement, supported by the Embassy of Chile to the European Union and the European Commission, strengthens the economic and regulatory ties between the two regions, which are fundamental for the global energy transition.
The MoU establishes a framework to promote exchanges between industries and public and private actors from the European Union and Chile. Its goals include strengthening regulatory frameworks, promoting trade and financing, and collaboration in research and innovation, as well as creating skills and value in the hydrogen chain. This alliance also seeks to position hydrogen as a key player in international climate negotiations and in the decarbonisation of sectors that are difficult to electrify.
Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe, said: “Today’s agreement is a tangible contribution by the hydrogen industry to the deployment of clean technologies and value chains. I am convinced that this cooperation will address the challenges of the sector, strengthening our economic ties and promoting global trade in clean hydrogen.”
For his part, Marcos Kulka, CEO of H2 Chile, highlighted the importance of Europe as a leader in climate solutions and said: “This agreement allows H2 Chile to advance in the development of a key industry to reduce emissions that are difficult to mitigate. Chile, as a competitive player in the green ammonia chain, is essential for global decarbonization.”
Felix Fernandez-Shaw, Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the European Commission, stated: “Chile is leading Latin America’s hydrogen development, paving the way for the decarbonization and green industrialization of economies across the region. We are happy to support this MoU to strengthen hydrogen business cooperation between Chile and the European Union and accelerate the hydrogen market from start up to scale up”.
Chile’s ambassador to the European Union, Gloria Navarrete, added: “The signing of this MoU is a relevant milestone in the collaboration between Chile and Europe, reflecting the spirit of cooperation and commitment to a sustainable future. This vision is also embodied in the new Chile-EU Advanced Framework Agreement, which includes a chapter dedicated to Energy and Raw Materials to support Chile’s green economy.”
This agreement reaffirms the commitment of both regions to the energy transition, placing hydrogen as a strategic pillar to face the climate crisis and promote sustainable economic development.
