Magallanes, Chile, July 24th.- The Magallanes region is at the forefront of an energy revolution. European consortium HNH Energy, comprising Austrian companies Austria Energy and Ökowing, and Dannish investment fund Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), has announced an ambitious US$11 billion project to produce and export green ammonia. This is one of Chile’s largest-ever environmental assessment projects.
The megaproject involves building a processing plant, a wind farm, a multipurpose port, and other supporting infrastructure. It aims to produce 270,000 tons of green hydrogen and 1 million tons of green ammonia annually, powered by 194 wind turbines generating 1.4 GW. This positions Magallanes as a global leader in the clean energy transition.
Green ammonia, derived from green hydrogen, is an efficient and easily transported energy carrier, making it highly sought after in international markets. This project marks a significant milestone in Chile’s development, solidifying Magallanes as a hub for sustainable growth. The US$11 billion investment will generate jobs: an estimated 3600 workers are needed during construction and 1800 for the operation of the plant, boosting the local and regional economy.
Chile’s Minister of Economy, Nicolás Grau, highlighted that this project is the largest of its kind ever evaluated in the country. He emphasized its role in diversifying Chile’s energy mix and attracting foreign investment.
Construction is set to begin in 2027, with commercial operations starting in 2030 and a projected lifespan of 50 years.
This project cements Magallanes’ position as a pioneer in renewable energy and a key player in the global energy transition. HNH Energy’s investment offers a unique opportunity to diversify the region’s economy and create high-quality jobs.
